So if you didn’t grow up in church, this concept might seem weird. Talking to God? Is that possible? Hearing from God? Does that make you crazy?
One of my favorite Bible verses says this:
“Yes. What other great nation has gods that are intimate with them the way God, our God, is with us, always ready to listen to us?” – Deuteronomy 4:7
In this verse Moses is talking to the nation of Israel reminding them why they worship. His main point is that God is real. God cares deeply for his people, is with them, hears them, is near to them as opposed to the false man-made gods of the neighboring nations.
As I read this story (or any story/verse of the Bible) I always ask the question, “How does this apply to my life?” One thing I notice in this particular verse is what it tells me about God. God desires intimacy with people. God, though sometimes perceived by us to be far off, is actually always ready to listen.
“When we create space and time to engage with God we find that more and more the above verse is something we can say about our own lives…”
At EDC we believe a huge part of the Christian life is to actively engage with God on a daily basis. We spend time reading the Bible because that is one of the main avenues that God uses to speak to people. We spend time in prayer because that is our way of talking to God and one of the main avenues of creating space to hear God. When we create space and time to engage with God we find that more and more the above verse is something we can say about our own lives: God is near to us, God hears us, God engages with us.
On “Monday Chats” I told you we would be unpacking the questions we talk about in our EDC groups. As I said above, we believe God is a God who is near and speaks to us and that gives us our first question: “What is God teaching/saying to you lately?” This question is a reminder for us to stay actively engaged with God and it is an opportunity to flush out what we think God is saying.
So, how about you? What is God teaching you? What has He said to you lately?
